SPECIAL
The Super Fight - (1969) (90min)
An NCR 315 (National Cash Register Corp.) computer was used for this impressive and extremely realistic film that used the finest state-of-the-art technology that was currently available to create a fantasy bout between legendary boxers Rocky Marciano and Muhammed Ali. Over 70 rounds of fights were used as blueprints for this computer-generated bout, the first ever such production. Both fighters participated in the production, as the dual likenesses were crucial to attain the final results. Rocky Marciano even lost 30 pounds preparing for the camera. From Marciano's high-top shoes of yesteryear, to the crowd noise and announcing of Guy LeBow, the feature looks like an actual championship bout between the two famed heavyweights. Without revealing the winner, the match went the distance and the victor won on points in a close contest, with neither fighter knowing the final outcome until the feature was shown. Released three weeks before Marciano's death in an airplane crash, The Super Fight still lives up to its title nearly 30 years later.(AMG)

CITY LIGHTS - Charlie Chaplin (Comedy) (1931) (87min)
Charles Chaplin was deep into production of his silent City Lights when Hollywood was overwhelmed by the talkie revolution. After months of anguished contemplation, Chaplin decided to finish the film as it began--in silence, save for a musical score and an occasional sound effect. Once again cast as the Little Tramp, Chaplin makes the acquaintance of a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill), who through a series of coincidences has gotten the impression that the shabby tramp is a millionaire. A second storyline begins when the tramp rescues a genuine millionaire (Harry Myers) from committing suicide. When drunk, the millionaire expansively treats the tramp as a friend and equal; when sober, he doesn't even recognize him. The two plots come together when the tramp attempts to raise enough money for the blind girl to have an eye operation. Highlights include an extended boxing sequence pitting scrawny Chaplin against muscle-bound Hank Mann, and the poignant final scene in which the now-sighted flower girl sees her impoverished benefactor for the first time. Chaplin's decision to release the silent City Lights three years into the talkie era was partially vindicated when more than one critic singled out this "comedy in pantomime" as the best picture of 1931.(AMG) Benny Leonard

BILLY ELLIOT - Jamie Bell (Drama) (2000) (110min)
County Durham, during the endless, violent 1984 strike against the Thatcher closure of British coal mines. The World of Billy Walker - (1964) (1hr)
Heavyweight boxer Billy Walker was a British sporting hero - a supremely courageous fighter with film star looks, who became a household name after millions of TV viewers saw him knock out giant American Charlie Powell in less than a minute into the 2nd round. Adored by men and women alike, Billy was the biggest box-office attraction in British boxing history, whose record for the number of successive Wembley sell-outs has never been beaten. He had a sumptuous home in Belgravia, filled with champagne and fine wines. He drove top-of-the-range sports cars. And, as one of the most famous faces in the land, he revelled in all the Swinging Sixties had to offer, including the company of beautiful women. When his boxing days were over, after fighting Henry Cooper for the British title, Billy continued to live the way he had fought - fast and furious, with no punches pulled. He became a millionaire, then nearly went broke. He has been married and divorced twice - and tragically widowed. (IMDB)

Prison Boxing aka Fight To The Max (2001) (1hr)
Documentary that explores the world of boxing through the story of prison boxer Clifford Etienne. Etienne overcame the odds and fought his way to freedom, eventually becoming a top heavyweight boxing contender. Serving 10 years for armed robbery, Etienne transformed himself in prison by embracing the discipline and training necessary to compete in prison boxing. Underscoring the distance between where Etienne has come from and where his is now, the program juxtaposes his transformation with the stories of other inmates who are currently behind bars.(NYT)(update:)Upon being paroled from prison in 1998 he became a professional boxer; he won 29 matches (20 knockouts), lost 4, and drew 2. On August 11, 2005, Fightnews.com reported Etienne's ring career likely over with the following story: Well known heavyweight Clifford Etienne was arrested Wednesday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and the attempted murder of a police officer. Etienne allegedly robbed a local business, car-jacked a vehicle containing a woman and her children, then pulled a gun on police officers. He is being held in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison with a $70,000 bond. On June 22, 2006, following his trial in Baton Rouge, Etienne was found guilty and sentenced to 150 years in prison without parole for an allegedly cocaine fueled crime spree that included robbing a check cashing business, carjacking and kidnapping a family, and attempting to shoot two policemen. In April 2013 his sentence was reduced from 150 years to 105 years due to a technicality.
