Documentary's billed as “uplifting stories of triumph over adversity” often turn out to be more irritating than elevating, thanks to their saccharine tone. In a welcome break from the norm, this hour-long film about a prison boxing program in Louisiana through which hundreds of prisoners have gained self-discipline and confidence is both artfully made and genuinely moving. Following a number of inmates, from first-time offenders to old veterans and one ex-con turned professional boxer, Clifford Etienne (who was re-incarcerated after the program was made), it’s a beautifully shot, quietly assured piece of work. |
