Mike Tyson: The Inside Story (1hr) (1995)
|
Controversial and hard-hitting, Mike Tyson was a boxing wunderkind. As the youngest heavyweight champion ever, Tyson started his career on high. His later fall from grace and struggle to get back on top are the subject of the hour-long documentary Legends of the Ring: Mike Tyson -- The Inside Story. Tyson was declared unstoppable early on, and his perfect record and grouchy demeanor were befitting a tough competitor. But, when legal woes took their toll, Tyson ended up in jail. His very public marriage and divorce added to the mystique of the violent contender. With promoter Don King by his side, Tyson made a second bid for glory after his release from prison. Legends of the Ring: Mike Tyson -- The Inside Story follows the entire journey from Brooklyn to Madison Square Garden. (AMG)

THE SET UP- Robert Ryan (Drama) (72min) (1949)
|
As shown by the clock face that opens and closes the film, The Set-Up takes place within a compact 72 minutes, with the action played out in "real time." Robert Ryan plays Bill "Stoker" Thompson, a washed-up boxer who refuses to give up his career despite the pleas of his wife Julie (Audrey Totter). There's little chance that he's going to win this evening's bout; still, Stoker's manager Tiny (George Tobias) has secretly made a deal with a crooked gambler (Alan Baxter). Stoker is to take a dive, a fact withheld from him until the fight is well under way. His last vestige of pride is aroused in the ring, but the story doesn't end there. The fight sequence is one of the most brutal ever filmed, with close ups of Ryan's pummeled face intercut with shots of screaming spectators in the throes of bloodlust. (AMG)

A & E Biography - Mike Tyson (1hr) (1995)
|
Mike Tyson has lived his professional and personal lives in the public spotlight, yet this installment for the A&E Biography manages to pack some surprises into its portrayal of the former heavyweight champion. Rescued from a life that would have led to "Attica or death," in the words of noted journalist Jack Newfield, Tyson was a prodigy in the ring due in part to his fanatical work ethic. His former managers and training partners interviewed in this documentary vividly recall a young Tyson who was always striving to be the best boxer ever, and footage shot for a documentary on his legendary trainer, Cus D'Amato, show him as a surprisingly sensitive 15-year-old. Tyson's years of perseverance paid off, yet after attaining great wealth and fame Tyson's life began to unravel. This documentary ends with Tyson still languishing behind bars, after being convicted of rape in a controversial case in Indiana, and while the video is dated, the coverage of his life to that point is first-rate. In his prime, Tyson was a brilliant boxer, and this intelligent and sensitive portrayal of how he was saved from a doomed life only to attain greatness and then spiral into self-destructive behavior is fascinating and disturbing. --Robert J. McNamara

The History and Impact of Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling I & II (1995) (1hr)
|
The son of a sharecropper, Joe Louis rose up through the ranks of amateur and professional boxing to become the world heavyweight champion, a title he held from 1937 to 1949. Louis is perhaps best known for his legendary match ups against German boxer Max Schmeling. Schmeling defeated Louis when they first fought in 1936, and in the run up to their 1938 rematch, the press imbued the bout with international political significance, portraying the match as an epic battle between Nazi ideology and American democratic ideals (even though Schmeling was never a member of the Nazi Party). When Louis defeated Schmeling by knockout in the first round, Louis became an American hero.
"Battle of the Century"
In 1938, champion Joe Louis announced that he would indeed face Schmeling for the title. The rematch became an instant international sensation. Many clamored impatiently for its happening, but others, afraid of international tensions and the possibility of Hitler taking over the championship, protested. The controversy and ballyhoo led to the event becoming the most anticipated boxing match since the rematch between Dempsey and Gene Tunney, or possibly earlier. Louis, with his poor, African-American roots was adopted by American fans as the symbol of America as a land of opportunity. In contrast, Americans perceived Schmeling and his ties to Hitler as an obvious threat to those opportunities and ideals. When the German walked to the ring at Yankee Stadium on June 22, 1938, he did so under a hail of garbage thrown from the stands. Louis came out blazing in the first round and Schmeling tried to counter-punch as he had in the first bout, but to no avail. Driven into the ropes and battered with a fusillade of short, crisp blows from every angle, Schmeling turned his back to his opponent and clutched onto the ropes, letting out a scream that even years later, many spectators could recall vividly. Schmeling would later say that he screamed because he had been hit with a blow to the kidneys. Schmeling's knees buckled under the punishment and referee Arthur Donovan pushed Louis away, beginning a count on Schmeling. Schmeling reluctantly stepped away from the ropes and Donovan allowed him to continue. A few punches later, Schmeling was knocked down again. From then on, he was helpless. He rose but fell moments later and Donovan stopped the fight.
Many years later, in 1975, Schmeling said, "Looking back, I'm almost happy I lost that fight. Just imagine if I would have come back to Germany with a victory. I had nothing to do with the Nazis, but they would have given me a medal. After the war I might have been considered a war criminal."(WIKI)
